Lauren is a non-binary digital artist who loves to go by the nicknames Crow or Nicole. They have a keen interest in anything sparkly and multicolor, as well as cartoon art and animation. Lauren’s love for birds and herpetology, zoology that surrounds amphibians like frogs and toads, is evident in their artistic works. Lauren’s journey with comics started as a challenging and confusing one. It was demotivating at first, but her determination to succeed kept her going. However, even with her full commitment, she faced several struggles. Poor planning, pacing, difficulty in creating unique shots, and trouble with plot development were just a few of the obstacles that she encountered. The process of creating comics is a complex one. The first step is to plan out the scripting for the story. This involves deciding on the dialogue, character interactions, and overall plot. The second step is to work on the layout. This involves figuring out the composition of the work, which includes deciding whether the page should be vertical or horizontal, determining the sizing of the panels, and figuring out the best poses for the character. As she learned and learned, entering contests and competitions the more knowledge she gained towards her work and the process of making any comics. She participated in galleries and art shows frequently. She has sold some of her illustrations in Fall into Art Walk. You can see one of her works below.
With many years ahead of her, she plans to pursue her passion for storytelling, animation, and show directing, aspiring to become a successful artist in these fields. Her friends are a constant source of inspiration and motivation, contributing ideas and helping to shape the characters in her stories. As Lauren mentions, each character is an extension of them all, with ideas bouncing back and forth between them. Being part of an artist community has been invaluable to her, expanding her knowledge and enriching her work. Drawing is not just a task but a pleasure, as she is addicted to the art form and draws because she loves it, not because she is forced to.
In conclusion, Lauren Ho’s journey as a comic artist has been a challenging yet rewarding one. With their exceptional skills and keen interest in storytelling, they have produced remarkable artworks that have been showcased in several art galleries and exhibitions. Despite facing various struggles throughout the process of creating comics, Lauren’s determination to succeed has kept them going.
